On Friday 20th September 2024, we set off on a challenge like no other — Sam’s Big Scoot — to help reach our £50,000 target for UK FIRES research.
Over three days, our team scooted 44 miles from Aston University in Birmingham, the heart of FIRES research, to Sam’s hometown of Derby. Powered purely by sheer determination (and a lot of leg power), it was a heartfelt tribute to Sam and to every family affected by FIRES (Febrile Infection Related Epilepsy Syndrome).
We travelled through bustling towns, quiet countryside paths, and city streets, united by one goal: to fund research that could save children’s lives.
It was more than just a challenge it was three days of camaraderie, resilience, and hope.
A community-powered success

The Big Scoot brought together participants of all ages some joining for the full three days, others for a single day or the final mile into Mickleover. Local families cheered us on, volunteers kept us fuelled and organised, and generous sponsors including The NORSE Institute, Ashgates Accountancy, and Bex Band helped make the event possible.
We were proud to scoot alongside experts from Great Ormond Street Hospital and Aston University, who are leading the way in FIRES research, and to have Bex Band, founder of Love Her Wild, guiding us through the preparation and training.
The journey ended with a fantastic finish line celebration at The Robin in Mickleover on Sunday 22 September. It was the perfect end to an unforgettable three days, filled with laughter, shared memories, and determination to keep fighting for a cure.
Why fundraising it matters

FIRES is a rare but devastating condition that affects healthy children after a fever. It causes explosive seizures and can lead to irreversible brain damage or death. There’s still so much we don’t know… no cause, no effective treatment, and no cure.
Our mission is simple:
Raise awareness so FIRES research becomes a priority.
Fund vital studies so no other family goes through what Sam’s did.
You can still get involved
Even though Sam’s Big Scoot is over, our fundraising mission continues. You can:
Donate to help us reach our £50,000 target.
Collaborate as a business or community group.
Host your own fundraising event from bake sales to sponsored walks, or even your own Sam’s Little Scoot.
Donate now or get in touch to start fundraising every mile scooted, every pound raised, takes us closer to a future where FIRES no longer devastates lives.
